Poker and the Luck Factor
There are a lot of reasons why some people win more often than others in Poker, but the one thing that is barely a factor is that of luck. This is a fact that a lot of non players or new players will find hard to believe, but it is true.
Just look at the Poker tourneys, both online and land based. Everyone starts with the same number of chips, everyone gets to call, bet, raise and fold according to the same rules, and gets cards from the same deck.
Yet at the end of it all, you will see the same names on the winners list, year after year. If the game is all about luck, then the winners in these Poker tourneys should be random. This is such a simple fact, yet a lot of people are still laboring under the illusion that the game is all about who gets lucky at the flop.
It is true that Poker involves chance, but there are also the odds that one has to consider. In a way, Poker is more analogous to a business venture. A businessman will not just put his money into an investment opportunity without studying the options and the risks involve.
Not only will he look at it from every angle but also look for ways to hedge his bet and if necessary, look for another investment opportunity instead.
The same thing with Poker. There is a always the chance that you will lose, but by studying the odds, you increase the likelihood of your winning, and lessen your dependence on luck. There is a reason why each variant has recommended starting hands.
If the opportunity presents itself, then grab it. If it does not, then you should, like a good investor, fold your hands and wait for the proper time.
Of course there will be times that you will lose, but in the long run, you will be better off. You will see the evidence of this in your bankroll.
A player who relies on luck will win sometimes, but that will only cost him more money. Why? Because winning once will encourage him to rely on luck again and again, and we know how fickle that can be.
Poker is not about luck. It may be a factor in a few instances, but that can be offset by your playing skills and Poker strategy. The more tactical your approach to the game is, the more you will be able to win , period.
The only time that luck can ever be a factor in the game is if you allow it.
