Strategies for Heads Up Poker

When the Poker table, full or short handed, has been reduced to two players the strategies and tactics will be different. If you want to excel in heads up Poker, then you must learn the proper strategies.

One of the first things that you should know is that any heads up Poker strategy rests on your ability to read your opponent and also your capacity to change your playing style and approach. If you had been playing the game tightly, then you should change your tack to being aggressive. The reason is that the one with the initiative always has the edge in heads up Poker.

If you opt for a conservative approach, the biggest problem that you will face in heads up Poker is that folding easily means you will be far behind. By the time you get the high hand to raise, your opponent will fold, and the amount you win will not be enough to offset the losses you incurred.

The same can be said with slow playing in heads up Poker; the longer you wait, the greater the chances that your opponent is going to get the big hand. So very often, unless you are playing a maniac, be aggressive.

Aside from being aggressive, your heads up Poker strategy should also place emphasis on the Aces and Kings. If you have these cards, you should raise, particularly if they are paired with a high number or suited. If you do not have Aces or faces, then you can raise with pocket pairs. Always remember that raising pre flop puts the onus on the other player to respond.

Remember also that bluffing and player reading are important in heads up Poker as well. If you are in the opposite side, that is, you were raised against pre flop, it does not necessarily mean that he has an AK; he could be bluffing and for all you know is holding a 5-8 off suit.

The difference maker, of course, is knowing how to read a player. If he is a frequent bluffer, then you can feel comfortable about re raising. Of course, if he is a tight player but suddenly makes a raise, then you know that he has a hand, and it is best to fold.

Heads up Poker is not as intimidating as it seems, provided that you know the right strategies. By applying the aforementioned tactics and techniques, you will be able to gain a significant advantage over your opponent.
